Trent Kelly Chief Winemaker
"Our brand is to pay homage to the hard work of previous generations"
Life in the wine industry for me started in 1999 working for Amberley Estate and Moss Brothers in the Margaret River region in the vineyard, with stints in the cellar during vintage. This strong interest in the industry was formed in 1995, when my parents built a holiday house in the Yallingup Hills. A number of iconic Margaret River wineries were a stone’s throw away. Foreseeing this as a lifestyle choice, viticulture was my chosen career.
In 2000, I started my university degree at Curtin University of Technology, initially studying viticulture but then moved to viticulture and winemaking in 2001, although viticulture was always the end goal. In 2002, I worked at D’Arenberg Wines in McLaren Vale and my love for winemaking superseded my need to tend vines. In short, my love affair with wine was born!
I held my first winemaking position in 2004. With this experience behind me I was lucky enough to be approached the work in Niagara Peninsula in Canada as an Assistant Winemaker for 2005 and 2006 in a newly formed and hugely successful producer mainly working with high end Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Upon my return back to Australia in 2007 I recommenced working in a leading Margaret River winery initially as a vintage Cellar Hand working up to Client Winemaker in 2008.
My desire to learn all things wine was still burning bright and I embarked on a 6 month journey in 2010 that lead me to Europe. Working in Languedoc in France and the Mosel region in Germany helped drive my winemaking to a new level. Return to Australia, my wife and I moved to Melbourne. I was lucky enough to spend 1 year under the guidance of Steve Flamsteed at Giants Steps in the Yarra Valley.
In 2011 I returned to Western Australia to take on a role as Winemaker at WA’s largest Contract crush facility. New ownership took over the winery in 2013, this lead to a promotion to Senior Winemaker. My desire to return to a premium branded focus producer lead to my movement to the Credaro team as winemaker in January 2016. In May 2017, I was promoted to Chief Winemaker.
Our brand is to pay homage to the hard work of previous generations, as Chief Winemaker my focus to ensure this is not forgotten but to grow that legacy for generations to come.
